Non-financial performance indicators

Performance indicator [B] Unit FY 2006 FY 2007 FY 2008 FY 2009
N/R Not reported
[A] Our performance indicators are under review to ensure we have measures appropriate for the enlarged Group.
[B] Due to the increased scale and scope of our organisation following the Altadis acquisition in January 2008, care should be taken when comparing data with previous years.
[C] Environmental data is reported 12 months in arrears to allow for data collection and verification. Efficiency measures relative to tobacco production are expressed as per million cigarette equivalents (MCE). 2008 data covers acquisitions since 2004 excluding Altadis USA, Logistics, Altadis main offices, and the new factory in Taiwan.
[D] ISO 14001 data for 2008 excludes the Altadis factories.
[E] Increase in waste in 2008 reflects inclusion of majority of Altadis factories, new factory in Turkey, and reporting of smaller and one-off waste streams previously deemed insignificant.
[F] Increase in energy and CO2 (scope 1 and scope 2) in 2008 reflects inclusion of majority of Altadis factories, new factory in Turkey, and changes in production processes at several sites to improve raw material usage.
[G] We use the GHG Protocol and UK DEFRA guidelines to inform our reporting. For 2008, we have added 32,870 tonnes of CO2 for emissions from electricity from renewable resources in line with DEFRA conversion guidelines. We have also used the GHG Protocol updated conversion factors which account for further increases in our reported emissions.
[H] The decrease in the number of tobacco suppliers participating in SRiTP during 2009 is due to the phased integration of Altadis suppliers into the process. Roll-out to Altadis USA suppliers is planned for 2010.
[I] Community investment donations do not include value of employee time, in-kind contribution or management costs.
[J] Since 2007, employment data has been reported six months in arrears to allow for verification. 2009 data covers 13,300 employees in 81 established reporting entities. Altadis operations will not be included until we have reviewed our measures.
[K] Rise in sickness absence in the first half of FY 2009 is under investigation. Data covers around 31,000 employees including the majority of the Altadis operations.
[L] Inquiries showed a misunderstanding in 2008 by the two entities that failed to confirm there was no forced labour. This data has been restated to show 100% across current reporting entities.
[M] OHS data is reported 12 months in arrears to allow for data collection and verification. 2008 data covers 31,341 employees including the majority of the Altadis operations.
[N] Lost time accidents are work-related accidents resulting in absence from one or more scheduled workdays or shifts.
